A year-long series of individual Clan Wars for fun and profit coming with Patch 2.1.
Broadcast live exclusively on MLG.tv
Teams can show the depth of their roster with individual members picked to play a single map each, with an ace match as the decider should it get to that point. This provides a chance for as many players as possible to show their skills while preventing teams with a single star player from running rampant over an entire opposing teams roster. The default format will be Best of 7 however there will be flexibility allowing smaller teams to play a Best of 5 instead. Teams will require a minimum of 5 players for BO7 and 3 players for BO5 formats. Teams can re-use players in the 2v2 match and the ace match can be any player including those who have previously played.
SHOUTcraft Clan Wars will showcase an entire roster of non-standard tournament maps from the Teamliquid map-making community, ranging from the uncommon to the downright outrageous. This will allow map-makers to gain valuable exposure, give spectators fresh experiences including matches that shake up the way Starcraft is played and allow teams preparing for big events to keep their tournament builds secret. Maps with half-bases? Sure. All-gold minerals? Why not? Floating destructible islands? We can do that. Raising lava? Absolutely! The sky is the limit for map design and we will be rotating out our maps on a regular basis to keep things interesting. Teams will be given the map list in advance so they have plenty of time to prepare unique builds for these unusual maps. We hope the use of new maps will also give a more exciting experience to the viewer, who might be tired of watching yet another game on Bel’shir.
SHOUTcraft Clan Wars will incorporate not only non-standard maps but also non-standard map formats. Each Clan War will feature a 2v2 map, which allows smaller teams to re-use players from their roster in a different format or even give some of their less competitive players a chance to shine. Going further than that, we plan to include the arcade maps Starbow and SC2BroodWar. While the majority of points in a series will be decided in 1v1s, these non-standard formats will be sprinkled in to spice up the series. One final benefit to the use of these Arcade maps is that with the release of the Arcade for free in Patch 2.1, we can engage those who do not usually play regular Starcraft as well as promote great Arcade maps for the spectators to play.
We want to provide the opportunity for teams to show off their sponsors, their skills and their personalities. We will use the latest Gameheart maps with the forthcoming Gameheart sponsor overlay to provide unprecedented levels of sponsor exposure in an online event. Team sponsors will be displayed in the players bases for the first few minutes of the game (before fading away so as not to annoy the spectator) and in our custom map loading screens. We want sponsors to enjoy the same level of exposure they receive from players being on stage at a live event, but during an online event with no team travel costs. We want to support the teams, get prize money into the hands of the players and make sure the sponsors that fund them are getting value for their money.
All of this sounds ambitious, but in reality it has been built from the ground up to be a sustainable model that can happen whenever is convenient for the teams. We have so many leagues in Starcraft 2 that it’s difficult to follow them all. Keeping track of massive events like WCS is tricky enough for the average player, so we want each Clan War to stand on its own as a unique event. Spectators get to show up and watch some entertaining Starcraft without having to spend their whole evening doing it. BO7 formats are usually over and done with in about 2 hours, so a SHOUTcraft Clan War is easy to watch and easy to digest. If you miss the Clan War, we will offer spoiler-free all-in-one VoDs on Youtube soon after the conclusion of each event. Clan Wars will be scheduled around other tournaments so as to try and not clash and they will occur at times convenient for the teams and casters. A team is focused on an event for a few weeks? No problem! This is not a league so they simply don’t have to play. Our pool of teams will be large enough that we will always have entertaining matchups available. Players not available because they’re travelling, injured or taking a break? No problem! We can simply shrink the format to a BO5, including a 2v2 to allow even 3-man teams to participate. The massive amount of organisation often involved in leagues is cut down to a bare minimum with Clan Wars. SHOUTcraft’s caster TotalBiscuit will be casting all of these events for free, so the cost of hiring casters disappears, allowing all of the prizepool to go to the players. Instead of a large tournament with big sponsors that must meet Return-on-Investment goals.
At the end of the day, we want Clan Wars to be fun for everyone, including the players. We want to give the players opportunities to banter and execute unusual strategies that they don’t usually have a chance to employ. We want each Clan War to be just as much about the bragging rights as it is about the prizepool and we encourage all our teams to brag and trashtalk during the event. You’ll get the chance to see your favorite players and teams in a different light. Watch them duke it out in a friendly custom game prior to the beginning of each Clan War, see them banter with each other and then go all out for the prize money. We want to be a breath of fresh-air in a sea of the same maps and games and more than anything else, we want everyone to love Starcraft 2.
